Hard palate is a part of oral cavity, bony part of the roof of mouth that creates a barrier between the mouth and the nasal cavity. Hard palate cancer originates from mucosa surface of hard palate.
Nasal tone of speech, loose teeth or pain around teeth, bad breath, difficulty moving jaw, lump in neck are commonest symptoms. Biopsy for confirmation of disease. CT scan for extent of disease.
Wide local excision with negative margin, neck dissection and reconstructive plastic surgery is recommended for early as well as advanced stage cancer. Selected patients may get benefit from obturator. Aim of reconstruction is to fill surgical defect and to separate oral cavity from nasal cavity and maxillary sinuses for rehabilitation of swallowing, speech and cosmesis. In case of advanced lesion, which requires extensive resection, reconstruction with soft tissue free flap or free bone flap with 3D printing can be done. Post operative adjuvant radiotherapy can be required depending upon histopathology report.
